LTE: Supporting Kim Stolow for BoE

To the Editor:

I served on the school board for 10 years, most of it in a leadership role, and was on the team that hired Tom Smith as superintendent. Dr. Smith and our Board members went through a learning curve together. The district grew stronger as each individual gained experience and applied their unique perspectives.

During my time on the Board, there was always representation of a cross-section of community stakeholders with varied experience levels, children in every one of our schools, parents such as myself when I joined, whose children weren’t yet school age and one or two senior citizens representing the perspective of retired community members.

Next fall, regardless of the outcome of the election, the majority of school board members will have children who graduated CHS but do not currently have students in our schools. Ironically, we will have no retired senior citizens. Currently, 8/9 Board members are serving in their first term.

Once again, we have a new superintendent. Please take this opportunity to set her up for success by electing a school board member who can provide a first-hand perspective of our school experiences.

As voters elect new board members now and in the future, please consider taking a longer-term view and elect candidates with children in the elementary school who will stick around and share their experience as their students progress through our schools.

Kim Stolow is the only candidate who will have a child in our elementary schools next fall. Please vote for her to provide the important perspective that our district so desperately needs.
