Mercer Collects Worn US Flags for Retirement Year-Round

by MercerMe Staff

Gathering American flags that are ready to be decommissioned is a year-round activity for the Mercer County office of Veteran Services. County Executive Brian M. Hughes recently helped Veteran Services Chief Larry Rosenthal empty the flag disposal box at the McDade Administration Building to make room for more worn flags that individuals and organizations can respectfully dispose of.

Unserviceable U.S. flags collected throughout the year are given a proper sendoff in June, when Mercer County holds its annual U.S. Flag Decommissioning Ceremony, or “flag retirement.”

Flag disposal boxes are located at Mercer County Connection, Route 33 at Paxson Avenue, Hamilton; Lawrence Headquarters Branch of Mercer County Library on Darrah Lane, Lawrence; and the McDade Administration Building, 640 S. Broad Street, Trenton. Flags also can be taken to the Mercer County Veterans Home, 2280 Hamilton Ave., Hamilton.

The Hughes Administration and Veteran Services over the past decade have collected tens of thousands of flags eligible for retirement.
