Mercer County has received a credit rating upgrade from Moody’s Ratings, a move county officials say reflects improved finances, stronger reserves and ongoing economic development efforts.
Moody’s announced June 12 that it had raised the county’s credit rating from Aa2 to Aa1, one of the highest ratings assigned by the agency. The upgrade could help lower borrowing costs for future county infrastructure and capital projects, potentially saving taxpayers money over time.
Credit ratings are used by investors to assess the risk of lending money to governments. Higher ratings generally allow municipalities and counties to borrow at lower interest rates when financing major projects.
In its report, Moody’s credited county leadership with stabilizing operations and improving the county’s financial position.
“The management team which took over in 2024 has stabilized and rightsized operations,” Moody’s wrote, noting the county’s growing financial reserves and conservative budgeting practices.
The rating agency also awarded Mercer County its highest governance score, citing strong financial oversight, experienced staff and long-term fiscal planning.
County Executive Dan Benson said the upgrade reflects efforts undertaken since his administration took office.
“This credit upgrade is a strong validation of the work we have done to restore long-term financial health to Mercer County while continuing to invest in critical services and infrastructure for our residents,” Benson said.
Moody’s also highlighted several economic development projects underway in Mercer County, including the expansion of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia into a former office building in Hamilton Township and redevelopment efforts along Trenton’s riverfront, including the area surrounding the former Trenton Thunder stadium.
According to Moody’s, Mercer County’s economy has continued to grow, with economic output increasing at a rate that outpaced the nation as a whole.
Mercer County Commissioner Chair Terrance Stokes said the rating upgrade reflects progress in strengthening the county’s financial position while maintaining services for residents.
The Aa1 rating places Mercer County among the higher-rated local governments in the state and marks another step in the county’s ongoing efforts to improve long-term financial stability and government efficiency.
