Route 1 Southbound to be Closed and Detoured Tonight in Lawrence

by MercerMe Staff

New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced Route 1 southbound will be closed and detoured in Lawrence tonight to create a center work zone as the project to replace the Route 1 bridge deck over Route 1 Business advances.

Beginning at 9pm, tonight, Friday, October 12, until 7am the next day, NJDOT’s contractor, Berto Construction, is scheduled to close and detour Route 1 southbound to install a temporary construction barrier and create a center work zone. The contractor also will close the left lane on Route 1 northbound. One lane on Route 1 northbound will be maintained.

Beginning 7am Saturday, October 13 and lasting until later this fall, the left lanes will be closed on the Route 1 Bridge over Route 1 Business in both directions with traffic shifted to the outside edge of the roadway. Two lanes will be maintained in both directions over the bridge.

The following detour will be in place Friday night:

Route 1 Bridge over Route 1 Business Southbound Detour

  • Motorists on Route 1 southbound should keep right to enter Route 1 Business southbound
  • Continue on Route 1 Business southbound to traffic circle
  • Take the second exit out of the traffic circle to Whitehead Road southbound
  • Keep right to enter Route 1 southbound

The $2.9 million dollar federally-funded project will replace the bridge deck, parapets, and concrete median barrier on the bridge. The project is designed in stages to minimize impacts to traffic and will maintain two lanes of traffic in each direction during peak travel times. During off-peak travel times, one lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction. The project is expected to be complete during the summer of 2019.

Variable messaging signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the motoring public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work. NJDOT will provide more information before any lane closures are scheduled.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info or on the NJDOT Facebook page.
