Shoplifting, Fraud, Burglary Under Investigation in Hopewell Township

Door Smashed in Attempted Burglary on River Road

On December 16 at 5:32pm, Officer James Stanton responded to a River Road address for a reported criminal mischief and attempted burglary that occurred moments earlier. The caller reported hearing a loud bang at his front door. When he went downstairs, he found the front door glass was smashed and a baseball bat was left on the porch. No entry was made into the residence or the vehicles on the property. The area was canvassed and evidence was collected from the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

Gift Card Scam Costs Victim $4,950

On December 17, Officer Eric Lei met with the victim of theft and fraud in the Hopewell Township Police Department (HTPD) lobby. The individual reported being the victim of a gift card scam over the phone. They received numerous text messages stating “Xfinity Alert” which directed them to call a number to resolve the issue. Once in contact, the victim was asked to purchase gift cards and provide the numbers over the phone. The victim reported purchasing $4,950 in cards. The investigation is ongoing.

Stop & Shop Theft Totals $358

On December 18, Officer Ryan Finnegan responded to the Stop & Shop on Denow Road for a reported shoplifting. The incident took place earlier on the same date and the suspects were not on scene. Loss prevention provided Officer Finnegan with surveillance video showing two parties in the store at approximately 10:54ak on this date. The subjects are seen taking $358.71 in items from the store and leaving without payment. The investigation is ongoing.

Seafood Theft at Stop & Shop

On December 21, 2024 Officer Lei responded to Stop & Shop on Denow Rd for a reported shoplifting which occurred on December 19 at 7pm. Loss prevention provided surveillance video which showed a male subject entering the store and taking $77.94 of goods without payment. The items were reported as seafood from the freezer section. The investigation is ongoing.

Stop & Shop Shoplifter Takes $619

On December 21, 2024 at 7:01pm Officer Lei responded back to Stop & Shop for another reported shoplifting. This incident took place on December 20, 2024 at 4:33pm. The surveillance video showed one female subject entering the store and taking $619.43 in various items from throughout the store. The investigation is ongoing.

Stolen Check Forged for $408

On December 30, Officer Michael Enriquez met with the victim of theft in the HTPD lobby. The victim stated that a check he sent in the mail was stolen and forged. The check, for $408, was mailed for a bill, but the victim was notified that the bill was unpaid and the check was never received. Information regarding the check and bank statement was provided to the officer. The investigation is ongoing.
