Spring Blooms at the 2025 Plant Expo & Garden Market

by Diane Carroll

Sunshine, seedlings, and a steady stream of gardeners filled Mercer Educational Gardens on Sat., May 3, for the annual Plant Expo & Garden Market hosted by the Rutgers Master Gardeners of Mercer County.

Located near the Equestrian Center in Mercer Meadows, the Mercer Educational Gardens is a unique, award-winning facility. Established in 1998 by the Rutgers Master Gardeners of Mercer County and the Mercer County Improvement Authority, the site features a self-guided tour of demonstration gardens, a wetland meadow restored with native grasses and wildflowers, and more than 20 composting methods that can be adapted for home use. The focus is on responsible gardening—emphasizing composting of garden and household refuse, along with plant selection and care for a variety of conditions. Public gardening events and programs are held at the site several times a year.

With this setting as the backdrop, the 2025 Plant Expo drew people ready to fill their own gardens at the plant sale. With many plants grown by the Master Gardeners themselves, the event offered a unique opportunity to support local horticulture and go home with healthy, garden-ready treasures.

In addition to the wide selection of homegrown plants, local vendors added to the market-style atmosphere.
