The Sourland Spectacular is back, celebrating its tenth consecutive year, returning to an in-person group event on September 11 and self-paced cycling, hiking, and running September 12-19. All are welcome to participate in the tenth annual Sourland Spectacular to enjoy natural beauty, fresh air, and fun to “Save the Sourlands.”
This year, the Conservancy will be offering our traditional event with some slight modifications to accommodate those riders who may not feel comfortable riding in large groups, promoting a full week of riding the routes and hiking our trails with rest stops and water stations still in place.
The $60 entry fee for the September 11 event includes lunch, swag, and rest stops with snacks. Course markers and rest stops will remain in place through September 19 for riders who prefer to ride the course and hike or run the trails on their own. There will be several new fundraising opportunities. This year the Spectacular is offering a new challenge for riders! Riders and hikers can opt to be sponsored and those who solicit $200 or more will receive a cycling jersey commemorating the event. Alternatively, riders will be able to purchase jerseys for $85. Proceeds from the Sourland Spectacular will support the Sourland Conservancy – a local nonprofit organization whose mission is to protect, promote and preserve the 90-square mile Sourland Mountain region. Their work is more critical than ever as the forest is on track to lose over one million trees within 3-5 years due to the invasive emerald ash borer. Proceeds from the event will help support our tremendous forest restoration effort, now underway. The Sourland Conservancy hopes to plant 10,000 trees and shrubs this year.
“Our staff, volunteers, and community partners are doing all we can to restore the forest. We need help,” said Laurie Cleveland, Sourland Conservancy’s executive director. “Millions of people rely on the forest to provide clean air and drinking water, habitat for endangered species, carbon sequestration, and more. Now, the forest is facing a serious threat. We will all need to work together to protect it.”
Business sponsorships starting at $300 are still available. Sponsors who sign up before August 10th will receive recognition on the back of the event jersey. “I hope everyone will join us in September on the trails, roads and social media,” said Cleveland. “Our team is developing some fun ways to connect with your friends, share your experiences, and challenge each other.” When posting, please include hashtag #sourlandspectacular2021.
The Sourland Spectacular will be held September 11-19, 2021 on Sourland region roads and public hiking trails. Cycling routes will be released soon. For more information or to register for the event, visit www.sourlandspectacular.com or email info@sourland.org
