Upcoming Art Exhibit Common Threads 5: Future Forward

Common Threads 2016: Hopewell Valley Vineyard owner Violetta and Councilwoman Marge Caldwell-Wilson

Warming up a chilly February weekend, C.a. Shofed proudly presents the countywide art exhibit, Common Threads. In its 5 year and growing, Common Threads 5: Future Forward will showcase talented artist from all over the Mercer County area at the Hopewell Valley Vineyards this Saturday, February 4th from 12-5pm. With an eye toward the modern, the industrial, and the abstract, this year’s theme envelopes the senses through various mediums, textures, and moods.

“The reason that Future Forward came to me was that a lot of the pieces were very impressionistic, rule-breaking, full of clean lines and varying colors and textures that seemed to resonate with the modern feel,” said Shofed, excited to present the exhibit to the public. “There are also some off-the-beaten-path stuff — really funky — kinda like a Trenton punk-forward feel to it. When I was talking to one of the artists, I just got this feeling of a unique urban, cool, hip, without being trendy, pretentious or a fleeting fad.”

When I asked about one of his contributions to this year’s exhibit, Shofed, thoughtfully proclaimed, “One of my pieces features a tangle of power lines and crows…something you might not see or notice in either a totally urban or totally rural setting. It’s like urban nature.”

Also, showing at this year’s event are local vendors The Gingered Peach, Ameerah Lynn Designs and Vintage Sweets who, in addition to their famous usual fare, will also be purveying items especially for this event.

The warm and rustic backdrop of the Hopewell Valley Vineyards, cared for and tended by Sergio and Violetta Neri, provides the perfect setting for indulging one’s artistic side. The Vineyards will be firing up their famous brick oven, making some of the tastiest pizza around, coupled with wine produced right here in the Valley.

Please note that most items displayed are available for sale.  Please visit https://www.facebook.com/events/1379248792086038/ for a preview of some of the items that will be shown on February 4, as well as artist and vendor bios. If you are interested in sponsoring an artist, please private message the Facebook page and someone will get back to you.

Renata is the author of "The Taste Chase," MercerMe's own food review column. She's a lover of all things poetic, colorful, funny and inspiring. A native New Yorker, who grew up in Hopewell Valley and spent the better part of her adulthood back in NYC, currently finds herself in a growing love relationship with “the Valley”. Latin food, Indian saris and mehndi, French perfume, African music, Middle Eastern spices, South American jewels, Asian fabrics and anything from just about any island (maybe not Riker’s Island) are things that remind her to go out and taste the world, live passionately and always wear deodorant. The mother of one rambunctious boy and the wife of a mellow fellow, Renata tries to put her too many years of university and her film and writing talents to good use here in NJ. “I’ve spent too much time trying to fit in some where when I probably belong everywhere. That slow revelation has been freeing.”
