Hopewell Valley Honors Nine Educators, Support Staff with Governor’s Awards

The Hopewell Valley Regional Board of Education recognized nine educators and support professionals during its Jan. 12 meeting as recipients of the Governor’s Educator of the Year and Support Professional of the Year awards, honoring staff members from across the district for their exceptional impact on students and school communities.

Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Special Projects Tana Smith said the honorees were selected through a nomination process involving colleagues, families, and students, with candidates reviewed at the building level for instructional excellence, dedication, and their ability to positively influence school culture.

Educators of the Year

At Bear Tavern Elementary School, special education teacher Shannon Murphy was recognized for her calm, thoughtful approach to teaching and her ability to support students with diverse learning needs. Principal Jay Billy described Murphy as a steady presence who helps students develop confidence and independence while also serving as a trusted collaborator and problem-solver for colleagues.

Dana Pontani, Hopewell Elementary School’s Educator of the Year, was praised for her creativity, enthusiasm, and strong connections with students and families. Principal Scott Brettell highlighted Pontani’s ability to bring music and joy into the classroom while maintaining high expectations, noting that her impact extends beyond academics to building a sense of belonging within the school community.

At Stony Brook Elementary SchoolDeberah Nutt was recognized for her consistent dedication to students and her role as a dependable, student-centered educator. Remarks during the meeting emphasized her commitment to meeting students where they are, her collaborative spirit, and the trust she has built with colleagues, students, and families over time.

Kimberly Lee, the Educator of the Year at Toll Gate Grammar School, was honored for her instructional leadership and her positive influence on school culture. Administrators noted her ability to connect with students across grade levels, her thoughtful approach to teaching, and her willingness to support colleagues, making her a respected and valued member of the Toll Gate community.

At Timberlane Middle SchoolWilliam Russell was recognized for his work supporting students during a pivotal transitional stage in their education. Remarks highlighted his ability to build strong relationships with middle school students, promote engagement and accountability, and create a classroom environment where students feel supported as they navigate both academic and social challenges.

Paul Tkacs, Hopewell Valley Central High School’s Educator of the Year, was honored for his lasting impact on students and his contributions to the broader school community. Principal Patricia Riley described Tkacs as an educator whose influence extends well beyond the classroom, noting his leadership, dedication, and the respect he has earned from students and colleagues alike.

Support Professionals of the Year

Two paraprofessionals and a campus safety officer were also recognized for their essential contributions to the daily life of the district’s schools.

Mike Saraison, a paraprofessional, was praised for his long-standing service and deep relationships with students. Administrators described him as a steady, compassionate presence who supports students academically and emotionally, often going above and beyond to help students feel safe, understood, and ready to learn.

Bernadette Furlong, also a paraprofessional, was recognized for her dedication to students and her integral role in supporting classroom instruction. Remarks emphasized her reliability, patience, and commitment to student well-being, noting that her work helps create a positive and inclusive learning environment.

Joseph Caloiaro, a campus safety officer, was honored for his professionalism and approachability. Board members noted his commitment to student safety as well as his ability to build respectful, positive relationships with students and staff, contributing to a welcoming and secure school environment.

Board members thanked all nine honorees for their service, emphasizing that the awards reflect the many ways educators and support professionals contribute to student success across the district.

The Governor’s Educator of the Year program is a statewide initiative that recognizes teachers and educational support professionals whose work exemplifies excellence, leadership, and dedication to public education.
