International Overdose Awareness Day Held in Hopewell Valley

by Esha Dhar

On August 27, 2019, the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office, the Prevention Coalition of Mercer County, and the Hopewell Valley Community are hosting an event for International Overdose Awareness Day. This event will be taking place at Woolsey Park from 6pm to 8pm.

During this annual event, Mercer County will be honor the lives of those who have lost the battle to drug addiction. It will also honor those who continue to battle against this awful disease. A candlelight vigil will be held for attendees to light candles in their loved one’s memory. In addition, a memorial display will be present. There will be recovery resources and a drop- box for old and unused medications as well.

It is no secret that the drug addiction epidemic has spread over the United States. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 19.7 million American adults have faced a substance-use disorder in 2017.* This is a number that has only grown since then. New Jersey is especially affected by this epidemic because it is located between New York Ccity and the Philadelphia metropolitan area, two prime areas for drug trafficking. However, New Jersey has a number of prevention laws and treatment facilities to address this issue.

Organizations can bring a table to this event for no charge. Everyone is welcome and their support is much appreciated.
