Local art and nature groups benefit families and Hopewell Elementary School

by Community Contributor

Hopewell Valley’s premiere land trust and art studio will join together starting this month to offer a series of art and nature family workshops with proceeds to support a new outdoor space at Hopewell Elementary School (“HES”). At the pilot session, families will create leaf monoprints under the guidance of Julie Rosenthale at her Art Spark studio in Hopewell Borough using leaves gathered from a local Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space (“FoHVOS”) preserve.

“As part of our mission, FoHVOS seeks unique ways to connect families with nature,” shared FoHVOS executive director Lisa Wolff. “Art is a great vehicle and Julie from Art Sparks makes it so engaging. Best of all, the finished product is a fantastic keepsake from the day.”

The program is designed for a parent and child to enjoy nature and create art together. Weather permitting, FoHVOS will lead an optional pre-session to collect leaves from their Thompson Preserve. Leaves will be supplied for families who skip the nature walk.

“Interacting with natural and art materials allows adults and children alike to exercise imagination, de-stress, and develop a respect for the beauty surrounding them,” added Julie Rosenthale, owner of Art Sparks. “We’re hoping people will take advantage of a wonderful afternoon to bond together in this way.”

Hopewell Elementary School STEM coordinator Helen Corveleyn said, “Creating art is such an important way to express and appreciate nature’s beauty.  HES is so very appreciative of the community connection that FoHVOS and Art Sparks brings to supporting our new reflective, creative outdoor space.”
