The main phone number of the Mercer County Clerk’s Office has been duplicated and many people are receiving calls from this number asking for money, announced Mercer County Clerk Paula Sollami Covello late last week. The callers are mainly phoning people from the County Clerk’s phone number, 609-989-6465, with the caller ID showing Mercer County, NJ. They are pretending to be family members, government employees and even public defenders, and they are asking for money. Many of the call recipients are in Florida, South Carolina and Virginia. The calls may not be limited to these areas, however.

County Clerk Sollami Covello warns individuals not to fall victim to these duplicitous schemes.  “It appears that our number has been duplicated by hackers and used to scam residents. We implore those who have been receiving calls of this nature not to give any money or financial information to these bad actors,” she added. They may be given an 888 number to call for payment. The Mercer County Clerk’s Office would never direct individuals to call this number.

If you feel you have been targeted by these scammers and have given money, please call your local authorities or call the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office at 609-989-6351 as soon as possible. You can also report it to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov.
