We Care Special Sports to Host Kids Triathlon at Schafer’s Sports

by MercerMe Staff

We Care Special Sports, a newly formed Mercer County based nonprofit, will be holding a kids’ triathlon, the Kids CAN Tri Triathlon, as its first community event on September 24th. We Care Special Sports’ mission is to provide low- to no- cost sports programming for special needs children and their families, including swimming instruction, gymnastics, biking, recreational sports, social games, and parent education seminars.

“I have been touched by so many families over the years,” said the organization’s executive director, Shannon Schafer, reflecting on her 25 years of experience working with special needs children. “Some of the unfortunate feedback is that families cannot find programs, recreational facilities won’t work with their children, or the cost is unaffordable. It breaks my heart to hear these stories. I vowed to make sure parents would have a welcoming and inclusive place to bring their children.”

The Kids CAN Tri Triathlon invites children ages 5-18 of all abilities to participate in 20 minutes each of swimming, cycling, and running. Participants will be encouraged to perform to the best of their abilities and will be supported as needed by staff and volunteers. All kids will receive an event t-shirt and medal to acknowledge their completion. The cost of registration is $30 per child and will take place at Schafer’s Sports Center, 5 Graphics Drive, Ewing, New Jersey.
