Crash on RT 579 in Hopewell Sends Two to Hospital

by MercerMe Staff

At 12:04 pm the Hopewell Township Police Department, along with the Union Fire Company and Rescue Squad, were dispatched to a motor vehicle crash on County Route 579 at the intersection of Pleasant Valley Road. Officers arrived on scene and found that a Hyundai Santa Fe and a Ford F350 had collided.

The Ford was driven by Kenneth J. Baker, a 65 year old male from Main Street in Pennington, New Jersey. Also in his vehicle was Eleanor Baker from Route 518 Lambertville NJ. She is the 95 year old mother of the driver.

The Hyundai was driven by a 17 year old Hopewell Township male.

Mrs. Baker was trapped in the vehicle for approximately 30 minutes before being extricated by members of the Hopewell Valley Emergency Services, West Trenton Fire Company and Pennington Fire Company.  Both she and Mr. Baker were transported to the hospital by Hopewell Valley Emergency Services, The Pennington First Aid Squad and Paramedics from Capital Health. The teenage driver was not injured.

Investigation into the crash revealed that Mr. Baker was travelling south on Route 579 and, as he passed through the intersection of Pleasant Valley Road, the 17 year old driver, who was travelling east bound on Pleasant Valley Road, failed to stop at the stop sign and struck Mr. Baker’s truck.  The impact caused Mr. Baker’s truck to overturn on its side.

The 17 year old driver was cited for failing to stop at a Traffic Signal and Careless Driving.

County Route 579 was closed for approximately 90 minutes during the incident.

The crash was investigated by Officer Mark Panzano.
