Intoxicated Driver Hits Cyclist in Hopewell Township

At 6:49 a.m. on May 29, 2015, the Hopewell Township Police Department responded to a bicycle motor vehicle crash on Pennington Lawrenceville Road near Van Brunt Road.

According to Hopewell Township Police, Debra Valentin, a 42 year old female from Ewing, was traveling west on Pennington Lawrenceville Road on a bicycle when a BMW driven by Brian Burns, a 48 year old male from Hamilton New Jersey made a left turn from Pennington Lawrenceville Road eastbound into a business driveway striking the bicycle. Ms. Valentin suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Capital Health Hospital-Hopewell Campus by the Pennington First Aid Squad.

Mr. Burns was placed under arrest for driving while intoxicated and transported to police headquarters. Mr. Burns was issued summonses for possession of marijuana under 50 grams, possession of drug paraphernalia, tampering with evidence and assault by auto. Mr. Burns was also issued motor vehicle summonses for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and possession of a controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle.  Mr. Burns was released and his case will be forwarded to the Mercer County Prosecutors Office for review.

This crash remains under investigation by Patrol Officer Ferner and Patrol Officer Hoffman.
