To the Editor and Community of Hopewell Boro,
Mail-in ballots are already arriving in mailboxes, and soon sample ballots will be sent to residents who plan to vote in person. On the far right of the ballot is a lesser-known elected position: County Committee.
The County Committee plays an important role in our local democracy. Its responsibilities include promoting good government and democratic values, encouraging grassroots participation, recruiting and supporting Democratic candidates, and running a fair and open convention system to endorse candidates in primary elections. At the local level, committee members also help fill vacancies in municipal offices when they arise.
This year, if you are a registered Democrat living in Hopewell District 2 (west of Greenwood Ave), your ballot will include an unusually large number of choices for this position. Four candidates are running for two available seats. Those elected will represent Hopewell Borough on the Mercer County Democratic Committee.
Membership in the committee includes several categories these include: elected district delegates (what you are voting for) and elected public officials. In fact, all municipal, county, state, and federal elected officials who live in or represent part of Mercer County and are registered Democrats are already members. This includes our Hopewell Borough mayor and council members.
We are writing to ask our neighbors to consider expanding Hopewell Borough’s representation on the Mercer County Democratic Committee by voting for Marian Labos and Kate Elliott for County Committee. We would be honored to serve alongside Mayor Kennedy and Councilman Fuller, who are already members of the County Committee based on their elected positions.
Sincerely,
Marian Labos, Hopewell Boro
Kate Elliott, Hopewell Boro
