The Hopewell Valley Soccer Association U9 Dust Devils finished their season with a victory at the Summer Classic in Hershey Pennsylvania this past weekend.
The spring season challenged this group with stiffer competition from a higher ranking group of young girls. Taking on the EDP futures league, the Dust Devils ended their regular season with a record of 4-3 and second place in the division. Entering the Hershey Summer Classic, the girls were stronger than ever, peaking with a season’s best. With the organization of brackets, they began against Old Bridge U9 Kru easily besting them first, then rolling through the second game against HMMS.
With a little siesta to chocolate world and maybe some “Reese’s Sized” roller coasters, they began their next day at 9:00 a.m. in 90 degree heat. Winning game one against PA Classics gave them a U9 Victory, organizers decided these U9 winners would play U10 winners Old Bridge Impact to find the overall champions. With a well fought battle, the girls held the older team to a 0-0 tie. With just 2 minutes remaining, a Dust Devil penalty kick soared over the wall and into the back of the net. Empowered and elated, they held off one last offensive attack to win the U10 championship.
Head Coach Ben Chrnelich said, “We’ve watched these girls tough it out many times, but I don’t think anything compares to yesterday’s effort. So proud of them! Go Dust Devils!!!”
