Hopewell Valley Golf Club pool to reopen this weekend

by Brian Chin

The well-known Hopewell Valley Golf Club, one of the community’s jewels, has not only changed ownership, but it also is being renovated. After the Club closed, the “Township of Hopewell approached [Mercer] County with interest in the County acquiring the property and operating it as a public facility,” according to Mercer County Park Commission Executive Director, Aaron T. Watson, in an interview with MercerMe. Though Mercer County now operates the Club, Watson explained, “We are keeping the original name, ‘Hopewell Valley Golf Club’. We thought this proper in keeping with the long history of the golf club beginning here in 1928.”

The new facility will have “golf, tennis (both clay courts as well as pickleball and platform tennis), and, of course, the pool,” said Watson. Though the construction process has been tedious, with repairs being done to a variety of infrastructure, Watson stated that community members will not have to wait much longer.

The pool will offer a unique opportunity for Mercer County to provide its residents with a new form of fun. “This pool represents the first time the Mercer County Park Commission will be able to offer a public pool to County residents. We envision public swimming seven days a week,” said Watson proudly. As with any other pool, swimming lessons will also be offered soon to those who are interested.

Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes summarized the process the best when he said: “Mercer County is excited to breathe new life into the Hopewell Valley Golf Club and offer new active recreational opportunities in this beautiful region of the county, while restoring the beauty and vitality to this new asset.” We can’t wait!

Mercer County spokesperson Julie Willmot stated: “Pool and tennis open this coming weekend – July 10-11. The golf course will open August 14 or 15, as we are awaiting delivery of a replacement bridge for a pre-existing one on the course. The bridge is scheduled to arrive about July 23.”
