Volunteers can help clean up the Delaware River and surrounding areas on Saturday, Sept. 19, as the 9th Annual Delaware River Cleanup returns with sites across Mercer, Hunterdon and Sussex counties.
Several cleanup locations are available in Hopewell Township, including two sites at Washington Crossing State Park.
The annual event brings together New Jersey State Parks, the Delaware River Greenway Partnership, New Jersey Clean Communities programs and volunteers to remove litter along the banks of the Delaware River. Cleanup sites stretch from the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area in Sussex County south to the Abbott Marshlands in Mercer County.
Individuals, families and community groups are encouraged to participate. Volunteers will be provided with cleanup supplies and a commemorative T-shirt, with light refreshments also available.
This year’s theme, “Where Legends Crossed, Keep It Clean,” recognizes the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Organizers note that the Delaware River provides drinking water to more than 14 million people and serves as critical habitat for wildlife and plants.
Most cleanup locations will be land-based. An on-the-water cleanup option will also be offered by Pennsylvania’s Delaware Canal State Park.
