Overnight paving and restriping on Route 29 in Lambertville, one lane in each direction

by Community Contributor

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced the start of a safety improvement project this week that will reduce a portion of Route 29 from two lanes to one in Lambertville.

Beginning at 8pm Wednesday, August 21 until 6am the next day, and again at 8pm Thursday, August 22 until 6am Friday, August 23, NJDOT’s contractor, Schifano Construction Corp., will close one lane in each direction on Route 29 between Swan Road and the south end of town where the road becomes one lane to repave and restripe Route 29. The new traffic configuration with one lane in each direction will be in place by the Thursday morning commute.

NJDOT, working with Mayor Julia Fahl and Sen. Shirley Turner, developed a cost effective safety improvement project that could be implemented quickly, addressing a concern that the town has discussed for nearly 20 years. The project is designed to improve safety and mobility for all users of the road. Reducing the two lanes to one, which is known as a road diet, is a proven traffic calming design.

In addition to the restriping to reduce traffic to one lane, U-turns will be restricted to two locations – one at Weeden Street and another at the first cut out in the median when driving north. There will be dedicated U-turn lanes to help prevent queing if a vehicle is waiting to make a U-turn.

The restriping of Route 29 also will create a total of approximately 50 designated parking spots on both sides of Route 29. The dedicated parking spaces will particularly benefit residents on the northbound side of Route 29 allowing room to park safely.

The project also will install new stop signs in two places. The first will be on South Main Street at Mount Hope Street. The second stop sign will replace the yield sign for traffic turning left from Route 29 northbound onto Mount Hope Street.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
