State Route 31 (Pennington Road) is closed from I-295 to Denow Road; traffic is being detoured. Hopewell Township police suggest that motorists who use Route 31 should consider an alternative route.
Township police and fire personnel are investigating the report of a possible gas leak at the site. According to police, Elizabethtown Gas is on the way to evaluate.
Updated 12/10 at 9am. Police and fire officials, as well as Elizabethtown Gas are still evaluating the situation. According to Hopewell Township Committee member Michael Ruger, homes in the immediate area of the suspected leak have been evacuated. Ruger indicated that it is unknown at this time when residents will be able to return to their homes. The police will keep everyone updated through their Facebook page and Swift911, which is Hopewell Township’s emergency management notification system. Hopewell Township Police report the following:
“Elizabethtown Gas officials have advised that most residents from Pennington Road that were evacuated earlier this morning may return to their homes at this time. Residents may need to speak with an officer at road closure points and provide their address information for access.
“Four residences are not able to be reoccupied at this time for safety precautions. Police personnel have spoken to those homeowners.
“Pennington Road remains closed at this time.”

“Elizabethtown Gas is actively working to repair the damage to a 2 inch gas line along Pennington Road. Repair work is expected to last through the evening rush hour.
“Unfortunately, Pennington Road remains closed to thru traffic between I-295 and the Pennington Circle. The detour route includes I-295, Scotch Road and Route 546.
“All homeowners are able to return to their homes. Residents may need to speak with officers at traffic posts for assistance in getting to their homes along Pennington Road.”
