Hopewell’s Verrelli tapped to head MCIA

by Amie Rukenstein

Mercer County Executive Dan Benson has put forward Hopewell Township’s own Anthony Verrelli as his choice to be the next Executive Director of the Mercer County Improvement Authority (MCIA). Verrelli grew up in Lawrence but has been a resident of the Township with his family for decades. He served as a County Commissioner (then freeholder) from 2016 to 2018, then was elected to the represent the 15th District in the General Assembly, where he has served ever since.

According to its website, the MCIA “was created in 1967 under the County Improvement Authorities Law to undertake certain projects for the benefit of the residents of Mercer County. The mission of the MCIA is to serve the needs of Mercer County improving the quality of life for the residents by providing programs and services for the County, Municipalities, school and fire districts, and not-for-profits in the areas of financing, project management, redevelopment, solid waste and recycling.”

Verrelli brings a wealth of experience from his extensive career in the construction industry, where he served as both a Journeyman Carpenter and in Union Leadership. During his nearly two-decade tenure in the Carpenter’s union, Verrelli held significant positions, including President of Local 254, Senior Council Representative of the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters, and a Trustee for the organization’s pension fund for a decade. Prior to elected office, Verrelli served six years on the Board of the MCIA.

“In Anthony’s long career with the Carpenters, and his time on the MCIA Board, he was always an advocate for investing in infrastructure and building quality projects that strengthened our communities. In his years as a labor leader, Anthony demonstrated extensive knowledge of the construction industry and a deep understanding of diverse stakeholder perspectives. As my Administration empowers the Mercer County Improvement Authority to broaden its scope, I know Anthony is the ideal choice,” said County Executive Dan Benson.

Verrelli expressed his gratitude to the County Executive for selecting him to lead the Mercer County Improvement Authority.

“County Executive and I have a longstanding working relationship, dating back to his time on the Hamilton Council. With the Mercer County Improvement Authority, we have the ability to expand economic opportunities and uplift our municipalities. I look forward to supporting the County Executive’s ambitious vision for Mercer County and am thrilled to be part of making his vision a reality,” stated Anthony Verrelli.
