AI Use in Local Election Raises Questions

by Letter to the Editor

To the Editor,

I’m writing to suggest that people support the AI chatbot ChatGPT as a write-in candidate for Hopewell Valley Regional School District Board of Education.

I’ve noticed that at least one of the write-in candidates for the Board has used AI to write their announcement of their candidacy. They have also used it to answer questions posed to them by their potential constituents.

There’s a delicious irony in a candidate for the School Board using AI like a cheating student.

But if that’s where we are now in Hopewell Valley, I suggest that we just cut out the middleman and vote for ChatGPT directly.

Yours,

James Stacey Taylor,
Hopewell Township, NJ

Hi James,

Thank you for your satirical suggestion to write in ChatGPT for HVRSD BOE. While surely you’re not suggesting that a candidate fabricated an entire platform based on AI, you raise an interesting and timely question about the extent to which AI can influence our candidates’ communications or even craft them.

Very best,
Mary Galioto,
