To the Editor and the entire community:
As we mark the sixth anniversary of The Chubby’s Project, I write with both pride and gratitude. What began in 2020 as a heartfelt response to neighbors in crisis has grown into something enduring, vibrant, and deeply rooted in our community. Today, we are stronger than ever — and our commitment to intentional neighboring has never been more visible.
Born out of the uncertainty of the pandemic, The Chubby’s Project started with a small circle of neighbors who simply asked, “How can we help?” From that question, a mission took shape. Today, we deliver more than 185 meals each week, maintain a 24/7 food pantry, and deliver groceries and fresh produce. We are supported by a remarkable network of more than 100 dedicated volunteers — many of whom have been with us since the very beginning.
In 2023, Founder Lyn Farrugia invited a small group of supporters to serve on the Board of Trustees who could bring nonprofit leadership skills, and help sustain the project’s mission through increased fundraising.. This past year, we welcomed three new board members whose talent, insight, and wisdom strengthen our governance. Our small but mighty part time staff — two cooks, a project assistant, and our Director, John Haney — work tirelessly to extend our reach. Under John’s leadership, we are serving more families, engaging more volunteers, and welcoming new donors and partners into this shared work of compassion.
This winter, the Board honored Lyn by naming her Emeritus Board Member — a fitting tribute to the vision and resolve that made The Chubby’s Project possible. Her belief in the power of neighbors caring for neighbors continues to guide us.
The Chubby’s Project may be small in size, but our impact is profound. Every meal prepared, every grocery bag delivered, every quiet conversation of reassurance reflects the generosity of this community. We are far more than fresh meals. Together, we extend a steady, compassionate hand to neighbors navigating difficult and often unexpected moments.
While much has evolved since 2020, our mission remains constant. It shapes every decision we make and is reflected in every interaction — with the families we serve and with one another. We are, at our core, a community committed to dignity, kindness, and mutual respect.
I am deeply grateful to serve alongside each of you in this important work. You make Hopewell not just a place to live, but a place to belong. Thank you for being part of The Chubby’s Project — and for your continued commitment to making a meaningful difference to our community.
With gratitude,
Brenda Considine
