Hopewell Elementary School Teacher Named Mercer County Teacher of the Year

by MercerMe Staff

Hopewell Elementary School teacher, Helen Corveleyn, was named Mercer County Teacher of the Year by the New Jersey Department of Education.

Corveleyn joined Hopewell Valley Regional School District’s Hopewell Elementary School (HES) in 2014 as a fifth grade science and social studies. Currently, Corveleyn serves as HES’s K-5 STEM facilitator.

Throughout our building and the district she is recognized as a passionate teacher who works diligently to educate children, make learning relevant and transform young lives.

A lifelong learner, Corveleyn is currently enrolled in a Masters program in Conservation Biology. She just returned from Borneo where she studied primate denizens, including the orangutan.  Last summer, she explored desert and marine landscapes in Baja.

Her accomplishments at HES include helping instill a school-wide passion for sustainability, overseeing the school’s vertical and outdoor garden initiative, and supporting the implementation of hands-on STEM education in preschool to fifth grade. During the past year, Corveleyn was integral in HES being named Best New Jersey Farm to School Program by the Department of Agriculture.

This is the second year in a row a staff member from Hopewell Valley has been named Mercer County Teacher of the Year.
